Understanding DNS Records

DNS (Domain Name System) translates human-readable domain names into the IP addresses that computers use to communicate. Different record types serve different purposes — here is what each one does and when you would use it.

ARecord

Maps a domain name to an IPv4 address. This is the most common record type — it tells browsers where to find your website. For example, pointing example.com to 203.0.113.10.

AAAARecord

The IPv6 equivalent of an A record. Maps a domain to an IPv6 address, enabling your site to be reached over the modern internet protocol. Essential as IPv6 adoption continues to grow.

CNAMERecord

Creates an alias from one domain name to another. Commonly used to point www.example.com to example.com, or to connect subdomains to external services like CDNs or SaaS platforms.

MXRecord

Specifies the mail servers responsible for receiving email for your domain. MX records include a priority value so you can configure primary and backup mail servers for reliable email delivery.

TXTRecord

Stores text data for various purposes including SPF records for email authentication, DKIM signatures, domain verification for services like Google Workspace, and security policies like DMARC.

SRVRecord

Defines the location of specific services on your domain, such as SIP for VoIP, XMPP for messaging, or LDAP for directory services. Includes port, priority, and weight for load balancing.
